Atlantic District, Missouri Synod, making a difference for two New Orleans churches
|
|
The Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, has been doing it’s part to help after Hurricane Katrina, “adopting” two congregations, St. Paul near the French Quarter, and St. John’s on Canal Street in Mid-City.
Five District pastors have already been down to the area, working with the churches.
Here’s the story of St. Paul, as told by the District’s Kathy Jagow, To read the story of St. John, click Above.
St. Paul, under Pr. David Goodine, became a place of refuge for hundreds of people when flood waters filled the streets. The church served 200 meals a day from its kitchen, and served its community in countless ways. Many older adults and young children slept at the church for days. As the band of survivors struggled to deal with the surreal conditions around them, they witnessed one miracle after another. Finally, after several days, an armed National Guard convoy evacuated Pr. Goodine and those who were remaining.
The church’s school building was spared from damage, for the most part; but the church was heavily damaged. It will need a new roof, and the bell tower lost three sides. The interior walls of the sanctuary were completely destroyed, and the organ was badly damaged.
After returning from a mandatory evacuation of the city, St. Paul immediately plunged back into active ministry. The leaders of the congregation, along with the pastor, principal, and staff members, are deeply committed to rebuilding the community. Worship services are being held weekly, and the congregation’s school is one of the few schools open in the entire city.
More volunteers are needed! St. Paul is housing and organizing volunteer crews to assist members of their church and community, as they return to New Orleans. No special qualifications are necessary – just a heart of love, and hands ready to serve. If you would like to make a mission trip and help out, the Atlantic District’s Katrina Ministry Steering Committee will be happy to assist with arrangements. Give Kathy Jagow a call at 914-337-5700 ext. 6.
Financial contributions are needed! Currently, all donations to the Atlantic District’s Katrina Relief Fund are being matched dollar for dollar, and are being sent directly to our partner congregations. Lives are being directly impacted by these gifts, and strong Lutheran ministries are being kept alive. You can make a powerful difference by sending your gift to the Katrina Fund, Atlantic District Office, 171 White Plains Road, Bronxville, NY 10708.
Prayers are needed! Please pray daily for the parishioners, pastors, teachers, and principals of our partner congregations. Ask God to give them strength and encouragement, and to bless the ministry efforts at St. Paul and St. John.
