General Slocum tragedy remembrance planned

June 15 will mark the 100th anniversary of the General Slocum steamboat tragedy, which claimed the lives of more than 1,200 people, most parishioners of St. Mark's Lutheran Church on the lower East Side. Two organizations have planned remembrances for June 12th and 13th.

The General Slocum Memorial Association will assemble June 12, 10 a.m., at the Slocum Monument in the All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village Queens. The State University of New York at Maritime will also hold events on June 12 and 13. On Saturday, a boat will depart from South Street Seaport at 9 a.m., and will follow the route of the General Slocum. Tickets are $35, including breakfast. Reservations can be made by calling the Maritime Museum, 718-409-7218.

On Sunday, the public is invited to two free ceremonies. The placing of a memorial plaque at the site of St. Mark’s Church, 323 East 6th Street (now Community Synagogue) at 9 a.m. This will be followed by a procession to Tompkins Square Park where a full ceremony will be held at the Slocum Memorial Fountain.
