Read more about Lutheran’s response to Katrina
Lutheran Partners Magazine recently described the ecumenical efforts of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) in response to Hurricane Katrina. "I have learned a lot about the inner workings of responding to a disaster and even more about the powerful and unsung work being done cooperatively by people of faith. There is a reason why our Lutheran organization is called Disaster Response and not Disaster Relief. To read more, visit Top News.

Survivors Network project to adorn taxi cabs
World Trade Center Survivors' Network is partnering with a non-profit organization called Portraits of Hope to bring to life a project called Garden in Transit. This is a groundbreaking and historic undertaking that involves thousands of children and adults across New York City, who will paint large, colorful flowers onto self-adhesive material that will be installed on yellow taxicabs beginning in September. These vibrant flowers symbolize life, beauty, hope, healing and inspiration. WTC Survivors' Network members will be distinguished by a special stamp that's being designed just for this event. They will be able to place this stamp either next to their name or in the corner panels to set them part from the rest of the project. None of the other groups contributing
to this project will have such a stamp. Look for this public art display this fall.

Red Cross seeks volunteers
The American Red Cross in Nassau County —planning for the worst—has, along with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, developed a countywide evacuation and sheltering plan. Presently, there are 232 volunteers who have been trained in shelter operations; however, a minimum of 1,500 additional volunteers are still needed. In the event of a hurricane, help will come from outside the region; however, initially, Long Islanders will have to help themselves. Becoming a volunteer is not very hard. All one has to do is get an application from the American Red Cross in Nassau County and then attend a three-hour course. More information can be obtained by calling 516-747-3500 or online at www.nassauredcross.org. A Shelter Volunteer Course will be held at the Nassau Chapter, 195 Willis Avenue , Mineola. The course is free. To register, contact Carlos Varon, Hurricane Preparedness Associate, at VaronC@usa.redcross.org

Army sets up hotline for wounded soldiers and families
The Army has announced a toll-free number "Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline" at 1-800-984-8523. The hotline aims to provide Soldiers wounded and injured in the current war and their families with a resource to obtain outpatient-related assistance for issues they have not been able to resolve through their own chain of command or medical treatment facility; and to capture information from soldiers and their families on the quality of outpatient care, in order to ensure prompt and thorough response to concerns and to increase the reality and perception of soldiers receiving timely, quality care. The Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline will be initially staffed 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (EDT) Monday through Friday.

LDRNY planning to release 5-year report
LDRNY is producing a five-year annual report of the agency’s projects, programs and funding. It will be mailed to churches and partners soon.

Students spend spring break in Louisiana
A primary goal among disaster response organizations in New Orleans is to have every house that Hurricane Katrina damaged gutted by the end of summer, according to Jessica Vermilyea, Lutheran Disaster Response coordinator for Louisiana. Vermilyea estimates that about 10,000 volunteers -- many of whom are college students -- will be working in Louisiana this month. Over 800 Lutheran college students are participating this month in "What a Relief!," an alternative spring break effort of Lutheran Disaster Response.

Take a planned Faith Walk around Ground Zero
With summer almost here, it’s a good time to visit New York City. LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero. Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair. If you’re planning a trip to New York City, or want to read more about others’ experiences, go to www.LDRNY.org. Participants always report back that they liked the Faith Walk. Here is a comment from one person: "It was informative, very moving, and certainly uplifting. In your very kind and thoughtful manner, you put us all at ease. Your friendly way made us all able to participate and enjoy this opportunity."
