Legal aid for people with storm damage
Through an agreement with the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, FEMA provides free legal help for those who suffered damages or losses from the major storm this spring. Residents of Albany, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Richmond (Staten Island), Ulster and Westchester counties may be eligible for the services, which include legal advice, counseling or certain types of representation. Types of assistance available might include: landlord/tenant issues, help with contractors
and home repair contracts, insurance claims, guardianships, and powers of attorney. For more information call the toll-free hotline: 1-866-488-0268, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

St. Paul’s International, Flora Park, offers legal aid
St Paul's International, Floral Park, offers free legal aid in conjunction with the CUNY School of Law. Free half-hour sessions with an attorney and immigration issue consults are offered Thursday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Other legal issue consults take place Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Call the church office at 718-347-5990 for more information or appointments.
Bishop Bouman to sign his new book June 20 at Synod Office
Bishop Stephen Bouman of the LDRNY leadership will sign copies of his new book, Grace All Around Us: Embracing God’s Promise in Tragedy, at a special reception June 20, noon-2 p.m., at the Office of the Metropolitan New York Synod in Manhattan. The book explores what sustains Christians when they’re confronted with tragedy and grief, and how Christians live in a changed post 9-11 world. Hurricane & evacuation planning event offered
The Human Services Council of New York, New York Disaster Interfaith Services and the New York City Office of Emergency Management sponsor “Hurricane & Evacuation Planning: A Summit for NYC Religious Leaders,” a free half-day event that will focus on the City’s Evacuation Plan for Coastal Storms, where NYC’s Flood Zones are, and the role of religious leaders and houses of worship in readiness, response and recovery. The event is June 5, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the NYU Kimmel Center. For more information, www.NYDIS.org
Death info being reported
The New York State Department of Health, in cooperation with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is collecting data on all deaths that occur after 9/11 among WTC responders (persons who worked on the WTC site anytime between 9/11/01 and 6/30/02, including barge and morgue workers). Findings will contribute to knowledge about WTC health effects and maybe helpful in improving medical treatment for other WTC responders and responders in the event of future disasters. Sexual abuse education offered
The Coalition Against Child Abuse & Neglect (CCAN) is dedicated to educating parents and concerned adults on how to keep children safe from sexual abuse. CCAN is a certified facilitator of the Stewards of Children® program. Developed by Darkness to Light (www.darkness2light.org), “Stewards” is designed to help churches, child care facilites, schools, and other youth serving organizations learn to recognize, prevent, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. With summer almost here, it’s a good time to visit New York City. LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero. Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair.
