God's blessings to Dr. John Scibilia during his sabbatical
LDRNY's Executive Director Dr. John J. Scibilia begins a six-month sabbatical this month. LDRNY's President and Vice President -- Bishop Stephen Bouman and President David Benke -- express gratitude for John's leadership since LDRNY was founded after Sept. 11. They write:"We are thankful to God for John's ministry among us in helping fashion the ministry of LDRNY, almost literally from the ashes of the Sept. 11th tragedy." WTC Survivors Network honors LDRNY
The WTC Survivors Network honored LDRNY with a Survivors Salute Award last week. The award recognized LDRNY's support of the Survivors. The event brought together many of the evacuees who fled from the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, as well as guests from Oklahoma City. LDR gets UNCOR gets Katrina Aid Today grant
A $6 million grant was awarded to Lutheran Disaster Response by "Katrina Aid Today," a national consortium of social service and volunteer organizations. LDR is one of 10 organizations to receive grants through the program, chosen from nearly 30 non-profit disaster response agencies that applied. Katrina Aid Today, administered by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), consists of those 10 organizations. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department for Homeland Security awarded nearly $66 million in grant monies for Katrina Aid Today. UMCOR is the humanitarian relief and development agency of the United Methodist Church.
       
Lutheran Medical Center reaches out to those affected by Sept. 11
In an effort to reach out to immigrant families directly impacted by Sept.  11, many of who were displaced workers in immigrant communities, and to address the unmet and outstanding vocational, mental health, and family support needs, Lutheran Family Health Centers Family Support Center at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn hosted a community fair earlier this month. "More than four years later, there are still families, particularly in the immigrant communities of southwest Brooklyn, that still need support," said Larry K. McReynolds, executive director of Lutheran Family Health Centers. "As one of the most diverse family health center networks in the country, we are particularly suited to help American Red Cross reach underserved communities and to provide longer-term support services to people affected by the events of September 11.?"  To learn more, call the Family Support Center at 718-630-7186.

Be aware that some Red Cross services for 9/11 close Dec. 30
The  Red Cross September 11 Recovery Program will close the following services on Dec. 30 --  The Client Support Network, Additional Assistance, Supplemental Gift, and Health Services. For more information, visit www.redcross.org/september11/help and click on"Sunsetting Timetable."

Servant event opportunities in NYC
Is your congregation looking for a Servant Event opportunity for Summer 2006? Koinonia NYC organizes servant events that include service projects, faith-based conversations, worship disciplines, Bible study, New York City experiences and a "Faith Walk" at Ground Zero. The full-week schedule combines service time in the urban environment of New York City with a closing weekend retreat at Koinonia's wilderness setting in cabin housing. Koinonia NYC will work with your group to create an event that will suit your group's interest and needs. Koinonia NYC is a ministry of Koinonia and works in partnership with Lutheran Social Services Lutheran Disaster Response of New York), and New York City Lutheran congregations to coordinate a meaningful broad-based experience. Housing options are available throughout Manhattan and the greater New York area, depending on group needs. Servant events can also be arranged with Koinonia NYC throughout the year as a week-long event, an extended weekend, or a weekend. The 9/11 Families Association is training volunteer docents to lead tours of Ground Zero. There are training dates in November in December. You can download an application at http://www.ldrny.org/GroundZero/GroundZero4.asp> or visit http://tributenyc.org/

Take a planned Faith Walk around Ground Zero

LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero. Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair. If you’re planning a trip to New York City, or want to read more about others’ experiences, go to www.LDRNY.org. Participants always report back that they liked the Faith Walk.
