Bishop Bouman to take new call to ELCA in Chicago

“Saying goodbye is incredibly difficult,” said Bishop Stephen Bouman, president of LDRNY, about his new call as executive director of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s unit of Outreach and Congregational Ministry. “I have shared so much of my life with the wonderful lives of people of LDRNY and metropolis.” Bishop Bouman, along, with the Rev. Dr. David Benke, president of the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri-Synod, started LDRNY in New York after 9/11, as the local expression of the national Lutheran Disaster Response. The Bishop will assume his new call at ELCA Chicago offices Jan. 1. To read the rest of the interview, go to www.LDRNY.org and click on Top News.

NYDIS gathers for Annual Meeting

One of every three houses of worship in New York City is located in a coastal flood plain. In disaster ministry, every $1 spent in readiness saves $7 in recovery. Preparing for disasters such as floods or pandemic flu is the first of the three Rs of readiness, response and recovery. Partnerships for the three Rs was the focus of the New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS) annual meeting on Nov. 15. LDRNY is a founding member of NYDIS. Survivors’ Network removes stairway

The World Trade Center Survivors' Network, an LDRNY partner, is nearing resolution in its battle to preserve the Survivors' Stairway. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. (LMDC) will move the entire run of stairs intact for preservation, including the remnant of the WTC Plaza landing still remaining at the top of the stairs. The stairs will be relocated to the museum area to provide for "meaningful incorporation of the story and significance of the staircase, within the primary narrative of the museum." The LMDC plan calls for part of the upper landing portion of the stairway to be relocated to the new Memorial Plaza -- in an area dedicated to survivors. More details are available at www.SaveTheStairway.org.

Memorial fountain unveiled

A new 9/11 memorial fountain was unveiled Nov. 16 at Wall Street's Manahattan Park, between Front and South streets. The project was made possible by Deutsche Bank's donation of $400,000 for the fountain's construction and maintenance. "The Wall Street Fountain is a gift to the City of New York in recognition of thebank's employees who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as a testament to the enduring spirit of the citizens of New York," said Deutsche Bank representatives. The memorial fountain is made of glass and granite, and the surrounding plaza includes visitor seating and landscaping elements.

The exhibit features paintings, collages and multimedia created between 2001 and 2006 by children in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
