Dear Friends of Lutheran Disaster Response of New York:

Here’s the November 3rd edition of Comfort & Renew Online, a weekly e-newsletter provided by LDRNY. If you have something to share, please drop an email to mikki@LDRNY.org

Daylight Savings Time is time to update disaster plans and kits

Twice a year we change the time on our clocks. It's also a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors, update family disaster plans and check/restock your emergency supply kits and Go Bags. For information and tips on how to do this, go to www.LDRNY.org and click on Top News. Resources may also be found at http://www.ldrny.org/Resources/Resources2.asp

Hurricane disaster assistance available in New York City

Hurricane evacuees who require assistance should first call 311 or report to the Katrina Welcome Center to schedule an appointment at the disaster assistance center. The Welcome Center at 80 Centre St. (at the corner of Centre and Worth Streets) is accessible by the 4, 5, and 6 subway lines to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall or the J, M, and Z lines to Chambers Street.  Center hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center will be closed Nov. 5 for Election Day and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day.

LDRNY needs holiday volunteers

Barnes and Noble on Astor Place will host LDRNY Dec. 2-4, as we wrap gifts to raise funds for our annual holiday drive. All cash donations made at the store will provide gift certificates for families economically affected by 9/11. If you'd like to volunteer for a gift-wrapping shift, send an email to mikki@ldrny.org or call the office at 212-406-9736. You can also stop in to shop on those days and have your purchase wrapped.

Advice for helping students recover from trauma

Tips for Helping Students Recovering From Traumatic Events is a new brochure from the U.S. Department of Education that offers advice to parents, teachers, principals, coaches and others for dealing with students' disaster-related trauma. For a copy, visit www.ed.gov or call 877-4ED-PUBS, while supplies last.

Grace, N. Bellmore, women get going on the Go Bags

Thanks to the WELCA group at Grace, North Bellmore, for helping to fill Go Bags. Go Bags are a great way to stay ahead of the curve on being prepared for any emergency or disaster. To see a photo of the Grace team, go to http://www.ldrny.org/Resources/Resources2.asp

Brush up on your emergency readiness skills

Imagine that you are without electricity, gas, water and telephone service. Imagine that all businesses are closed and you lack emergency services. What will you do until help arrives? The Department of Emergency Services in San Francisco has provided answers to these questions, including how to prepare for different kinds of emergencies. It also discusses the importance of a Go Bag. A friend of LDRNY said, “I thought it was pretty impressive, and unlike most other government-organized operations, it was simple, practical, and user-friendly. Plus, the info seemed like it would be applicable no matter of where you lived.” To read, go to http://www.ldrny.org/DisasterPrepare/index.asp

Take a planned Faith Walk around Ground Zero

LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero. Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair. If you’re planning a trip to New York City, or want to read more about others’ experiences, go to www.LDRNY.org. Participants always report back that they liked the Faith Walk. Here is a comment from one person: "It was informative, very moving, and certainly uplifting. In your very kind and thoughtful manner, you put us all at ease. Your friendly way made us all able to participate and enjoy this opportunity."

Make a gift to LDRNY

LDRNY is grateful for the gifts it receives. This week, gifts were received in memory of SAL SCIBILIA by Irene and Joel McFadden and Kraft Associates.  If you’d like to make a donation to honor or memorialize someone, send a check to LDRNY at the address below. Tell us who should be notified of the gift, and please provide an address. Thrivent members will have their gift matched.

You may now make a gift to support the work of LDRNY among the hidden victims of Sept. 11 online, thanks to Lutheran Community Foundation’s Charity Finder. Go to
