Seminar on dealing with stress, terrorism/war
Faithful Response, a ministry of Lutheran Disaster Response of New York and Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre, sponsors a seminar on dealing with stress, terrorism and war, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Island City, Oct. 22, 1 to 3 p.m. The event includes lunch, followed by a presentation to help to deal with issues related to 9/11, all the related events of the war on terror and trauma issues. Pr. Tom Taylor, coodinator of LDRNY for Long Island, and Faithful Response’s Michael Arcari will share stories of healing and a general sharing may take place, and questions about treatments will be answered. You do not have to be directly affected by the events of 9/11, or the war on terror, to join us. The event is open to all displaced workers, volunteers, uniform services, construction workers, military and all friends and families. Faithful Response is an innovative, faith-based health program that provides free confidential counseling and support. For more info, go to www.LDRNY.org .
Lutheran World Relief helping in Pakistan
Lutheran World Relief is working with its partners in ACT, a global consortium of churches, to support affected families and communities in Pakistan devastated by the earthquake. To see how, go to www.LDRNY.org .
Volunteers needed for a research project
You're invited to participate in a study about trauma, and how it affects people. This study will explore issues of child abuse and how they impact a person's reactions to trauma later in life, such as Sept. 11. The study will be conducted by Kevin O'Brien, MSW, a graduate student at New York University's School of Social Work. The requirements for participation in this study are: 18 years of age, and in Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001. Participation in this study is voluntary and you may withdraw at anytime.Participation consists of completing a five-part questionnaire that will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, either online or in person. There will be no payment for your time or participation. Your identity will remain anonymous. Seminar offered on children's resiliency
The Columbia Resiliency Program is hosting "Fostering Resiliency in Children Through Community" on Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Milstein Hospital Building, Clark Conference Room #3. The program features speakers from the National Center for Disaster Preparedness and The Children's Health Fund, and will discuss different strategies for strengthening child resilience in response to traumatic events. Oct. 16 is World Food Day
Support the fight against hunger in your area by donating non-perishables or volunteering at a local pantry or soup kitchen. Lutheran-run food pantries are located on www.LDRNY.org . You can also join the CROP walks at Baldwin Park, Westhampton, Southhampton, Easthamton, and Northern Brookhaven to raise funds for the relief and development work of Church World Service and the hunger ministries on Long Island. Faith Walk Leader training set for Oct. 19
Koinonia NYC offers a unique ministry of hope and healing through Faith Walks at Ground Zero. Visiting groups spend about three hours at the LDRNY Comfort and Renew Center, walking around Ground Zero, and at St. Paul's Chapel. Koinonia NYC is looking for additional Faith Walk Leaders to assist with this exciting ministry and will offer training on Oct. 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 22 Cortlandt St., 20th Floor.
