Lutherans from around the metropolitan New York area will gather Sept. 8, at Holy Trinity, Manhattan, to mark the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11. The commemoration event is sponsored by LDRNY, a joint ministry of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to help those affected by Sept. 11. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes special music and reflections from the Rev. Dr. Stephen P. Bouman, Bishop of the Synod and President of LDRNY, and the Rev. Dr. David H. Faithful Responses Dr. David Grand will be screening his new documentary, Come Hell or High Water,at the Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Drive, at 6pm on September 11. The film shows the struggles and connections between survivors of disaster and tragedy, and includes a road trip from New York City to Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. All are welcome to attend. 9/11 Recovery Worker Compensation & Registry
A recent bill that created a workers' compensation registry for workers and volunteers who did rescue, recovery or cleanup work after 9/11, eliminates the two-year cut-off for filing a workers' compensation claim. By registering, workers and volunteers who are not sick will have the right to obtain workers' compensation if they become sick in the future. Anyone who had been turned down for 9/11-related workers' compensation earlier can file a new claim or register under the new law. The deadline to file a claim or register is August 14, 2007. For more information, or to register, call NYS Workers' Compensation Board at 877-632-4996.

Lutheran Disaster Response, in cooperation with the ELCA Communication Services unit, has produced a video to document the alternative spring break efforts of college students along the Gulf Coast. In March, nearly 1,100 college students from 54 different schools participated in the first-ever Lutheran Disaster Response "What a Relief!" spring break. The students lived and worked for a week in locations all along the Gulf Coast as part of the long-term recovery from the 2005 hurricane season. LDR seeks volunteers to rebuild after hurricanes
It's almost a year since Hurricane Katrina, and another hurricane season is upon us, but the rebuilding work from the 2004 and 2005 storms is far from over. Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to the long-term recovery of the areas affected by these disasters -- a commitment that could last as many as 10 years. Volunteers are needed at LDR sites in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Volunteers must be 16 or older, in good health, have a good attitude, and be willing to work hard. The conditions, especially with summer's heat and humidity, are less than glamorous. But the work is rewarding. If you're interested in putting together a work crew, visit www.ldr.org/volunteer.
Red Cross still provides 9/11 aid
As the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches, the American Red Cross reminds you that people affected by this tragedy can still receive financial assistance if they need it for mental health and substance abuse treatment. The deadline to enroll in the 9/11 Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program is Jan. 2, 2007. More than 10,000 people have already enrolled. Visit www.9-11mentalhealth.org.
