Pace University hosts 9/11 conference
Pace University, near the LDRNY Comfort and Renew Center in Lower Manhattan, will host a conference Sept. 6-8 entitled"AfterShock." ? The event will focus broadly on the consequences of 9/11, and will include forums,
presentations, and an exhibition on rescue, recovery, and response. To receive complimentary admission, you
are encouraged to pre-register at www.pace.ed/aftershock.
Flood assistance available in upstate New York
The past few weeks have brought bad weather and flooding to many New York areas, including a recent tornado that hit Westchester County, a northern suburb of New York City. Homeowners, renters, and business owners in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga, and Ulster counties in upstate New York can apply for federal disaster aid by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency's toll-free registration number. Phone lines are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Flood victims may also register for disaster assistance online at www.fema.gov. For more information, go to www.LDRNY.org
LDRNY, Faithful Response plan pastoral retreat this fall
LDRNY and its partner, Faithful Response, are planning a retreat " Strategies for Pastors During Times of Crisis and Anxiety" -- Nov. 13-15, with Lutheran pastor and psychotherapist Dr. Peter Steinke as the keynoter. Dr. Steinke is an expert on family systems theory, and is often called upon to discuss how pastors can take care of themselves during crisis. Watch this eletter for details on the retreat.
Learn more about your local hurricane evacuation plan
Did you know that one in four New Yorkers lives in a hurricane evacuation zone? Join NYDIS and OEM for a community event to ask questions about New York City's Coastal Storm Plan and get advice from trained emergency management professionals on how to create a disaster plan, build a communications plan, and have the right tools to help keep you and your family safe. These events are free to the public and will take place in communities around New York that are most vulnerable to storm surge in event of a coastal storm. To find out more about events in your community, visit www.nyc.gov/oem or call 311 to request a copy of the new hurricane guide.
OEM offering preparedness presentations
The Office of Emergency Management is conducting community presentations on hurricane preparedness, on topics like self- and family preparedness, evacuation, shelters, special needs, communications and much more. Faith Walks, Servant Events busy this summer
Summer is a good time for a Faith Walk around Ground Zero, and Pr. Ann Tiemeyer, director of Koinonia NYC, coordinator of the events, expects a busy two months. "I think we'll have 2,000 people before the end of the year,"? said Pr. Tiemeyer, anticipating about 75 groups in 2006. Groups include, for example, confirmation classes, choirs and church organizations visiting the New York area from around the country. LDR seeks volunteers to rebuild after hurricanes
It's almost a year since Hurricane Katrina, and another hurricane season is upon us, but the rebuilding work from the 2004 and 2005 storms is far from over. Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to the long-term recovery of the areas affected by these disasters -- a commitment that could last as many as 10 years. Volunteers are needed at LDR sites in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Volunteers must be 16 or older, in good health, have a good attitude, and be willing to work hard. The conditions, especially with summer's heat and humidity, are less than glamorous. But the work is rewarding. If you're interested in putting together a work crew, visit www.ldr.org/volunteer.

Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair.
