Dear Friends of Lutheran Disaster Response of New York:

Here’s the July 14th edition of Comfort & Renew Online, a weekly e-newsletter provided by LDRNY. If you have something to share, please drop an email to mikki@LDRNY.org .

Flood assistance available in upstate New York
The past few weeks have brought bad weather and flooding to many New York areas, including a recent tornado that hit Westchester County, a northern suburb of New York City. Homeowners, renters, and business owners in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga, and Ulster counties in upstate New York can apply for federal disaster aid by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency's toll-free registration number. Phone lines are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Flood victims may also register for disaster assistance online at www.fema.gov. For more information, go to www.LDRNY.org

We remember bombing victims
Our prayers are with the people of London as we remember the anniversary of last year's subway bombings, and this week's bombings in Mumbai, India. On July 7, 2005, 52 people were killed and nearly 800 injured in London when suicide bombers attacked the crowded rush-hour underground. This week's bombings caused similar destruction and tragedy in Mumbai, a metropolitan area of India. We remember, and lift up all those who are victims and survivors of man-made disasters.

Post traumatic stress disorder a serious problem that continues to affect victims
LDRNY Coordinator Mikki Baloy has written a piece about how post traumatic stress disorder affects victims of disaster, tragedy and violence. To read her story, go to www.LDRNY.org and click on Top News.

LDRNY, Faithful Response plan pastoral retreat this fall
LDRNY and its partner, Faithful Response, are planning a retreat " Strategies for Pastors During Times of Crisis and Anxiety" -- Nov. 13-15, with Lutheran pastor and psychotherapist Dr. Peter Steinke as the keynoter. Dr. Steinke is an expert on family systems theory, and is often called upon to discuss how pastors can take care of themselves during crisis. Watch this eletter for details on the retreat.

Learn more about your local hurricane evacuation plan

These events are free to the public and will take place in communities around New York that are most vulnerable to storm surge in event of a coastal storm.  To find out more about events in your community, visit www.nyc.gov/oem or call 311 to request a copy of the new hurricane guide.

Faith Walks, Servant Events busy this summer
Summer is a good time for a Faith Walk around Ground Zero, and Pr. Ann Tiemeyer, director of Koinonia NYC, coordinator of the events, expects a busy two months. "I think we'll have 2,000 people before the end of the year,"? said Pr. Tiemeyer, anticipating about 75 groups in 2006. Groups include, for example, confirmation classes, choirs and church organizations visiting the New York area from around the country. LDRNY partner launches resources web tool
NYDIS has launched its web-based 9/11 Resources page for case management agencies, service providers, unions, community and faith-based organizations as well as for clients impacted by the disaster. The resource link includes a range of information from current case management agencies serving 9/11 victims to available mental health services, resources for job development, training and micro-business loans, how to find immigration and workers compensation attorneys plus more. On a monthly basis, the NYDIS 9/11 Resources page will be updated with new resource information to assist clients in attaining sustainable recovery. LDR seeks volunteers to rebuild after hurricanes
It's almost a year since Hurricane Katrina, and another hurricane season is upon us, but the rebuilding work from the 2004 and 2005 storms is far from over. Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to the long-term recovery of the areas affected by these disasters -- a commitment that could last as many as 10 years. Volunteers are needed at LDR sites in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.  Volunteers must be 16 or older, in good health, have a good attitude, and be willing to work hard.  The conditions, especially with summer's heat and humidity, are less than glamorous. But the work is rewarding. If you're interested in putting together a work crew, visit www.ldr.org/volunteer.

Does your church want to learn about preparedness?
Michael Arcari, program director for Faithful Response, an LDRNY partner, is available to discuss disaster preparedness at your church. He can discuss how to be prepared, along with showing what goes into a Go Bag, or a topic of special interest to you. To schedule a talk at your church, call Arcari at 516-679-0080, or faithfulresponse@ldrny.org. Visit www.LDRNY.org

Take a planned Faith Walk around Ground Zero

LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero. Faith Walks are inspirational and educational tours of Ground Zero and surrounding landmarks, encouraging healing and hope in the face of despair. If you’re planning a trip to New York City, or want to read more about others’ experiences, go to www.LDRNY.org. Participants always report back that they liked the Faith Walk. Here is a comment from one person: "It was informative, very moving, and certainly uplifting. In your very kind and thoughtful manner, you put us all at ease. Your friendly way made us all able to participate and enjoy this opportunity."
