LDRNY & Faithful Response provide trauma training
In late May, Faithful Response and Lutheran Disaster Response of New York sponsored a seminar on Comprehensive Acute Traumatic Stress Management (CATSM). The CATSM workshops were well attended by members of the mental health community, local hospitals, the Suffolk and Nassau counties police and fire departments and Emergency Medical Services. The day-long workshop was designed to help first-responders and the mental health community understand the effects trauma has on the victims. A better understanding can gives responders the skills they need to help victims get through an immediate crisis. To read the full story and see photos, go to www.LDRNY.org. Click on Top News.

Lutherans contribute more than $24 million to Hurricane Katrina
In response to Hurricane Katrina, Lutherans from around the world have contributed $24.4 million to date. Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR), a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is overseeing the expenditure of the contributions that are supporting recovery work along the U.S. Gulf Coast and among people displaced from their hurricane-damaged homes. The 2005 and 2006 budgets developed to invest the gifts were built to meet LDR's core components of response, said Heather L. Feltman, LDR executive director and director of ELCA Domestic Disaster Response. LDR's response involves assistance to people displaced from their homes, emotional and spiritual support for those affected by disaster and care for caregivers, coordination of volunteers and long-term recovery response, and distribution of hardship grants for survivors of disasters who need assistance in covering immediate expenses.

American Red Cross seeks organizations for community sheltering
Hurricane season arrives in June, and it's everyone's job to be prepared.  The American Red Cross (ARC) is seeking partnerships with community-based organizations for community sheltering. ARC will provide the training, verify that the shelter is safe and meets ARC standards, and cover all the related shelter expenses (food, equipment & liability). The agency/church/organization would provide the volunteers and/or the facility,  and ARC would train the volunteers to work in the shelter as a team. The shelters could be located at your church, school or facility, or volunteers could be assigned to an ARC shelter location. Your organization would "adopt" a shelter to run as a team with ARC's support and guidance. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Esther Bevers-Ng, 516-747-3500 X 224   beversng@usa.redcross.org
