Dear Friends of Lutheran Disaster Response of New York:

Tribute Center welcomes its 100,000 visitor
LDRNY partner, the 9/11 Widows and Victims Families Association, marked the 100,000th visitor to the Tribute Center at Ground Zero in mid-January. The Center gives visitors an understanding of what was lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and offers art, recovered artifacts, multimedia, and guided tours with survivors, victims' family members, recovery workers, and Lower Manhattan residents. http://www.911families.org/
NYDIS database enhances NYC disaster preparedness
New York Disaster Interfaith Services, of which LDRNY is a partner, recently launched its secure web-based database system – HOWCALM --that tracks the logistics and assets of houses of worship, religious schools and faith-based service providers in New York City. Every house of worship in NYC will receive a registration package by mail as HOWCALM™ is rolled out in all five boroughs over the next few months. This disaster preparedness tool can be used by faith-based organizations to manage the assets of houses of worship under their jurisdiction; or by emergency management to plan humanitarian response in times of crisis. http://www.nydis.org/resources/headlines/2007_01_17a.php
Register with the EPA for 9/11 testing
Manhattan residents who want their offices and apartments tested or retested for 9/11 dust and residue can register by calling 888-747-7725. The Environmental Protection Agency will register commercial and residential spaces in lower Manhattan until March 30. The EPA will specifically test the air and dust in buildings near the World Trade Center site for asbestos, lead, man-made fibers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chemicals formed during fires at Ground Zero.
LDR needs volunteers to rebuild on the Gulf Coast
Volunteer assistance is still needed by Lutheran Disaster Response
in the Gulf Coast as this multi-year response continues. As recovery along the Gulf Coast continues, more skilled volunteers are needed. Anyone interested inputting together a volunteer work crew can find information at www.ldr.org/volunteer. Planning is also under way at LDR for the second installment of “What a Relief!” an alternative spring break effort. Last year, nearly 1,100 students from 54 colleges and universities spent their spring break repairing homes along the Gulf Coast. Nearly 1,000 students have signed up to work this year, and final preparations are being made for their trips.
LDR encourages getting prepared in 2007
In 2007, Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) has named disaster preparedness as a top priority. The organization encourages preparedness by Lutheran congregations and social ministry organizations. Affiliate agencies continue to be an active part of preparedness in their communities as they encourage congregations and even individual families to prepare themselves.. As part of this priority, LDR is re-designing many of our existing materials on congregational preparedness to make the more user-friendly and appealing. Stay tuned…
Disaster readiness begins with good self-care
The beginning of a new year is always a time of hopefulness. For those who dedicate themselves to the work of disaster response, a new year is inevitably accompanied by thoughts of how a new year may bring a new disaster. The single most important preparedness activity we can do before a disaster happens is to live healthy, well-balanced lives right now. Intentional self-care is never a matter of selfishness, but rather an investment in our health and wellness so that we can be prepared to work the tireless hours demanded of us when disaster strikes. Consider taking good care of yourself this year … to be ready for any disaster to come.
Take a planned Faith Walk around Ground Zero
LDRNY partner Koinonia NYC invites you to take a Faith Walk around Ground Zero.
