LUTHERANS PLAN CHURCH SERVICES TO COMMEMORATE SEPT. 11, 2002

NEW YORK, NY – August 26, 2002 – To commemorate the events of Sept. 11, Lutherans have planned several services in New York City.

• Sept. 8, 5 p.m., St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 619 Lexington Ave., Manhattan. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Bouman, Bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preach. Bishop Elisa Buberwa of the Northwest Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, will preside. (Holy Eucharist with Annointing and the Laying on of Hands for Healing)

• Sept. 10, noon, The Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Dr., Manhattan. An ecumenical service to commemorate 9/11. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Bouman, Bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preach. Service includes representatives of the Jewish, Catholic, Greek Archdiocese and United Methodist faiths. Benediction will be given by the Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. Planned in conjunction with the Council of Churches of the City of New York and the Commission of Religious Leaders.

• Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m., St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 105 Highland Pl., Brooklyn, the Rev. Dr. David Benke preaching. (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod)

• Sept. 15, 6 p.m., Festival Memorial Vespers, Holy Trinity, Manhattan, 3 West 65th St., New York, N.Y. 212-877-6815.
